As Senior Pastor of the Cathedral of Faith for the past 43 years, I have witnessed the incredible growth of San Jose. Our city has been a worldwide leader in innovation.
Last week, we learned that Santa Clara County has the highest wages in the country. Yet, even here, we still have workers who earn far too little to afford to live in our wonderful community. I see the daily challenges many of our fellow citizens face first hand, through our Reaching Out Food ministry that served 50,000 individuals last year with emergency food bags. It used to be most of our clients were seniors or disabled who were unable to work. As the cost of living has increased in our Valley, we've seen a dramatic increase in the numbers of working people who need help -- and who do not earn enough money to pay for food and rent.
With every blessing comes responsibility, and with every responsibility comes accountability. Our City has been richly blessed, and now should continue its leadership in maintaining the standard that has already been set; ensuring that San Jose will continue to lead the way in providing employees that serve the City a living wage -- including everyone who works at the San Jose Mineta Airport. To whom much is given, much is required. We should do nothing less.
